Review of BRING IT ON

On Tuesday, 14th June, a group of 21 members of the Probus Club of Perth, and their friends and spouses, were highly entertained by the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts production of the hit American musical Bring it On at The Regal Theatre in Subiaco following a very convivial dinner opposite, at Chutney Mary’s.

It was wonderful to see the stage presence and extraordinary singing, dancing and acting talent of the cast, all of whom were 2nd and 3rd year musical theatre students. They were most ably backed up by 2nd and 3rd year WAAPA music students who were equally impressive in the orchestra pit. Also, the costume designer and the sound designer, whose high standard of work was so plain to see and hear, were both completing their Bachelor of Performing Arts degrees this year.

The story of two rival cheer leading squads, each from adjoining high schools on different sides of the social track, provided a base from which to explore “the complexities of friendship, jealousy, betrayal and forgiveness”, to quote from the WAAPA website. The music was fast-paced and the lyrics witty and bitingly satirical, if sadly a little hard to pick up for those of us not familiar with the songs. The enthusiasm and precision of the complicated dance moves were so exuberant that it was hard to sit still, even for those of us getting on in years.

We all left the theatre, marvelling at the output of our own local performing arts college and wondering on which stage or screen we’d next be seeing these wonderful young “triple threats” ‑ those whose talents cover acting, singing and dancing like those of Hugh Jackman and Lisa McCune, to name just two of WAAPA’s illustrious alumni.
